DEPARTMENT OF RASA SHASTRA & BHAISHAJYA KALPANA

The Department of Rasa Shastra & Bhaishajya Kalpana is a crucial branch of Ayurveda which deals with the preparation of medicines by using Kashtaoushadi (herbal), Rasoushadi (Mineral) and Kashta-Rasoushadi (Herbo-mineral), standardization and administration of Ayurvedic medicines. This department plays a significant role in ensuring the efficacy, safety, and therapeutic potential of Ayurvedic formulations. It deals with Indian Alchemy, Pharmaceutics and Pharmacotherapeutics.

Bhaishajya Kalpana (Ayurvedic Pharmaceutics)

  • “Bhaishajya” means medicine, and “Kalpana” refers to processing or formulation. It involves the study of

• Various dosage forms such as Swarasa (juices), Churna (powders), Avaleha (herbal jams), Asava-Arishta (fermented liquids), Vati (tablets), and Ghrita (medicated ghee).

• The principles of extraction, preservation, and enhancement of medicinal properties of herbs.

• The manufacturing techniques of Ayurvedic medicines to maintain their potency and stability.

Rasa Shastra (Ayurvedic Alchemy &Herbo-Mineral Medicine)

“Rasa” means the metal mercury, and “Rasa Shastra” literally means -the scienceof Mercury and generally refers to the Science of Making minerals assimilable for the body so they can be used as medicines. This branch of Ayurveda deals with:

• The processing and purification (Shodhana) of metals, minerals, and mercury-based formulations for therapeutic purposes.

• The preparation of Rasaushadhis (herbo-mineral medicines), including Bhasma (calcinated powders), Pishti (fine powders), and Kupipakwa Rasayana (herbo-mineral preparations using specialized heating techniques).

• Enhancing the bioavailability and therapeutic effects of metals and minerals through Ayurvedic pharmaceutical techniques.

This department is essential in bridging the gap between classical Ayurvedic formulations and modern pharmaceutical advancements. It ensures that Ayurvedic medicines meet quality standards and safety guidelines, allowing for their global acceptance and integration into modern healthcare systems.

Vision

The primary aim of the Department of Bhaishajya Kalpana& Rasa Shastra is to :

• To develop skills in formulating and manufacturing Ayurvedic medicines including knowledge of good manufacturing practices.

• Provide in-depth knowledge of Ayurvedic pharmaceutics and herbo-mineral drug formulation.

• Develop studentsto gain hands-on experience in preparing Ayurvedic formulations, including herbal, herbo- mineral, and metallic based medicines

• To validate and modify formulations as well as participate in research on the efficacy and safety of Ayurvedic medicines

• To develop professional competency in Ayurvedic pharmaceutics allowing students to select and administer medicines safely and effectively.

• Ensure the safe and effective application of Ayurvedic medicines in clinical practice.

• To help students graduate with a strong foundation in Rasa shastra and Bhaishajya Kalpana can find Career opportunities in various areas, including Pharmaceutical companies, research Institutions, and Medical Colleges
